Abstract

Rationale: The quality and quantity of bone is important parameter for predictable success of implant prosthesis. Availability of bone might depend on many factors like time period after the extraction, trauma, patient’s systemic condition, local pathological lesions, presence of adjacent teeth, sinus membrane thickening or racial and regional variations. There are differences in teeth size amongst different ethnic or
regional groups. This might be true for the jaw bones as well. This study was carried out to evaluate the amount of bone and its relative density in Mumbai – Navi Mumbai population. Material and Methods: The CBCT data at different CBCT centers and total of 250 scans done as diagnostic imaging for the placement of implants were selected for this study. The selected implant sites were divided in to four regions - Mandibular anterior, Mandibular Posterior, Maxillary anterior and Maxillary Posterior and analyzed for height, width of the bone available, and its relative density. Results: Maximum mean height measured was in mandibular anterior region in both male, female followed by mandibular posterior, maxillary anterior and maxillary posterior. Maximum mean width measured was in maxillary posterior region, followed by mandibular posterior and mandibular anterior. Maximum relative density measured was 884.40 HU and 857.32 HU in mandibular anterior in male and female patients, respectively. Minimum relative density measured was 334.20 HU and 321.10 HU in maxillary posterior in male, female patients. Clinical Significance: This CBCT-based study has enabled us to visualize the bone dimensions and relative density of jaw bones in the Mumbai population in India.
