Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of sub gingivally delivered metronidazole gel and tetracycline fibers when used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: This is a split mouth study design where three sites are selected from each patient and allocated into three treatment groups. Group 1 comprising Metronidazole gel + SRP, Group 2 Tetracycline fibers + SRP, and Group 3 SRP alone which is the control group. The clinical parameters such as Plaque index, Gingival index, Probing pocket depth (PPD), and Clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline, 1st and 3rd months. Results: In this study, two groups Metronidazole + SRP group, Tetracycline + SRP group showed decrease in PPD and CAL gain from baseline to 3 months, but more statistically significant scores P < 0.001 were seen in tetracycline group. However, in SRP group this difference in PPD, CAL scores when compared to test groups was not significant. Conclusion: All the three treatment groups showed statistically significant changes in the clinical parameters from baseline to 3 months. Tetracycline fibers treated group showed better efficacy in terms of reduction in PPD and gain in CAL followed by metronidazole gel group and SRP alone group.
