Background: To evaluate variations in serum lipid profile in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to compare and correlate the serum lipid profile in different clinical stages and histological grades of OSCC. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with OSCC and twenty five age and sex matched healthy controls were included in the study. Serum lipid profile including total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDLC) and triglycerides were evaluated with the help of a semi-automatic analyzer. Students ‘t’test and ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. Results: Statistically significant decrease in levels of serum TC, LDLC, HDLC, VLDLC and triglycerides was observed in cancerous group when compared with the control group. Conclusion: There are definite variations in the serum lipid profile of OSCC patients. Serum lipid profile might help in evaluation of prognosis and follow-up of OSCC patients.
