Aim: To assess periodontal status of the patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and to compare with those without orthodontic treatment. Material and method: A total of 100 patients were evaluated, 50 males and 50 females. Age group selected for the study was 15 to 30 years. Community Periodontal Index for Treatment Need was used to assess the periodontal health of patients. Patients were divided in two groups, orthodontic group and non orthodontic group. Results: Out of 100 patients 50 % were females and 50% males. Out of 50 patients in orthodontic group; 29 patients i.e. 58% had periodontal pocket (CPITN score 3 & 4). The CPITN score showed that 58% had periodontal pocket in group 1 whereas only 16 % had periodontal pocket group 2. Only 35 patients were found using Interdental brushes for cleaning. Conclusion: Patients’ undergoing orthodontic treatment finds it difficult to maintain oral hygiene which leads to increased plaque accumulation. Educating patients can help to minimize the problem.
