Abstract

Although poor dental health has been linked to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), few research have looked into the relationship between oral health and COPD exacerbations. We wanted to see if poor oral health is linked to COPD flare-ups and/or poor respiratory health. As we all know, COPD is a common preventable and treatable respiratory disease characterized by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive, as well as an increased chronic inflammatory response in the airways and lungs to noxious particles or gases. Adults with poor dental hygiene are more likely to develop periodontitis. Smoking is a common risk factor for both periodontitis and COPD. In the pathophysiology of respiratory infections, oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans play a role. As a result, the goal of this study is to determine the periodontal health of COPD patients.
