Background: Basic principle behind orthodontic treatment is that when force is delivered to a tooth certain mechanical, chemical and cellular events take place within these tissues which allow for structural alterations and contribute to the movement of that tooth. Hence; we planned the present study to assess the variations occurring in salivary levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) during orthodontic tooth movement. Materials & methods: A total of 30 subjects were included in the present study. Fixed orthodontic treatment was started in all the patients. Unstimulated salivary sample was obtained in all the patients. All the samples were collected in the morning and were sent to the pathology department for estimation of salivary levels of osteoprotegerin. Salivary sample collection was done at three different stages; At baseline- Before the starting of the treatment, At 24 hours after the starting of the fixed orthodontic treatment, and One month after the starting of the treatment. Estimation of osteoprotegerin levels was done using ELISA technique. Results: Mean OPG levels at baseline was found to be 1.02 pg/mL. At 24 hours after the starting of the fixed orthodontic treatment, mean OPG levels were found to be 1.41pg/mL One month after the starting of the treatment, mean OPG levels were found to be 1.19 pg/mL. We observed a significant rise in the OPG levels after the starting of the fixed orthodontic treatment, followed by a significant decline to the OPG levels to the baseline range. Conclusion: There might be some correlation between salivary OPG levels and different stages of orthodontic tooth movement.
