Abstract

Restoration of carious teeth by filling the cavity with amalgam needs to sacrifice the tooth structure to impart the property of retention of the filling. Moreover, the restoration-tooth interface does not have proper bondage, leading to microleakage and shortening the lifespan of the filling. Hence, to minimize the tooth structure loss and improve the interface property came the era of biomimetic materials like composites and glass ionomer cement. The arrest of an incipient carious lesion by mineralization of enamel with an optimum concentration of fluoride and the formation of nanocrystals imitates physiological mineralization. Similarly, the mineralization of dentin with amorphous calcium phosphate uses non-collagenous protein analogs for intra- and interfibrillar apatite crystal growth.
