Abstract

Background:  Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are arguably a common disease and because of the complex nature of temporomandibular joint it is often very difficult to treat. Botulinum Toxin (BTX) is a neurotoxin that is produced by the bacterium that is responsible for Botulism. The neurotoxin works by weakening the muscles and stopping them from contracting. Current medical recommendations favor invasive and non-invasive treatments including the injection of BTX into masticatory muscles. This article elaborates the effectiveness of BTX in the treatment of TMDs.
