Comparative Evaluation of Perception in Tooth Shade Selection between Patients and Dental Professional

Abstract


Background: This study was to evaluate and compare the tooth shade selection perception in patients and dental professional using Vitapan classic shade guide, assessment of tooth shade by a dental professional, self-assessment of tooth shade by the patients, and comparison of tooth shade perception between patients and dental professional. Materials and Methods: The assessment of tooth shade is carried out by a dental professional using a Vitapan shade guide. Followed by, each participants were requested to estimate his or her shade selection using the same Vitapan shade guide without the notice of what professional has chosen. Results: In this study, a sample of 300 subjects was evaluated using the chi-square test, which revealed a highly significant difference (P < 0.0001) in the distribution of perception choices between patients and dentists. Notably, 40% of the patients preferred a lighter shade compared to the dentist’s perception. In addition, younger patients displayed higher accuracy in tooth shade assessment compared to older patients. Conclusion: To optimize patient satisfaction with the treatment outcome and ensure, it aligns with their esthetic preferences. It is vital to acknowledge that certain patients may specifically prefer a BRIGHTER and glossy appearance as opposed to a more natural esthetic.
