Abstract

Aim:  Purpose of this study is to evaluate the Comparative evaluation of Stability and Gingival Health with three different types of retainers.  Materials & Methods: Sample size involved 90 participants, who have undergone fixed orthodontic treatment. (Age between 12-25 years). Participants were assessed at an interval of 3 months. T0 indicate stability and gingival health just after debonding, T1-3 months after debonding and T2 -6 months after debonding. Participants were randomly allotted with removable Hawley’s (Group1), fixed (Group 2) and vacuum formed retainer (Group 3). Brushing technique were explained to the patient and were asked to brush twice a day. Plaque index, Gingival Index, Oral Hygiene Index and Irregularity Index were measured using caliper and curved probe at To, T1 and T2. Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 20 and p value<-0.05 was taken to be statistically significant. Results: This prospective study indicates that there is significant difference in plaque index, gingival index, Oral hygiene index level and Irregularity Index at T2 with respect to T1, T0. Plaque index, oral hygiene index and gingival index is higher in group 2 patients (Fixed retainer) (p=0.003 and 0.001) However, patients with fixed Retainers have low irregularity index than removable Hawley’s and vacuum formed. (p=0.001) Conclusion: Through this prospective study, it can be concluded that the plaque index, oral hygiene index and gingival index were significantly different between Hawley’s, fixed and vacuum formed retainer. Fixed retainer showed increase in plaque deposition, calculus deposition and gingival inflammation as compared to other two retainers. Irregularity Index for three retainers showed that Hawley’s retainer had higher probability of relapse as compared to vacuum formed retainer and Fixed retainers. Also, by the end of 6 months all the periodontal parameters and Irregularity Index showed an increase in the value.
