Abstract

Background:  The aim of this prospective controlled clinical study was to compare the effect of suture and suture less technique on the healing of extraction socket following third molar surgery. 20 patients with impacted lower third molars were taken for surgical extraction (12 males; 8 females; aged 20-40 years). The patients were randomly divided into two equal groups ( Suture  n-10, Suture less  n-10 ). In group -A patients who had undergone third molar surgery followed by closure with suture.(Primary closure). In group-B patient who had undergone third molar surgery followed by closure without suture.( Secondary closure). Pain, swelling, trismus and wound healing were evaluated 1st, 2nd and 7th day postoperatively in both the groups. There was significantly less pain, swelling and trimus in suture less group ( p < 0.05 ) as compared to suture group. There was no significant difference in wound healing between the two groups on 7th post operative day ( p > 0.766 ). Thus, we conclude that suture less technique is a better alternative to conventional suturing technique for closure of wound after surgical removal of impacted third molar.
