Complexities in Diagnosis of Cysts of the Jaws and its Management

Abstract

Background:  Cysts of the jaws are often lined by a layer of epithelium and a layer of subjacent connective tissue and these layers can be dissected easily from bone. The thickness and configuration of this lining varies with the type of the cyst. These cysts develop either by the proliferation of epithelial remnants in the jaw or by cystic transformation of neoplastic tissue. This article includes a comprehensive and up-to-date review on the cysts of the oral cavity. Finally, issues related to differential diagnosis and therapeutic approaches to manage the cysts included are described.

Keywords: Cysts of the jaws, surgical treatment options for cysts, differential diagnosis of cysts.
