Abstract

Background:  To determine the effect of submucosal Dexamethasone injection given pre-operatively in third molar surgery on facial swelling and trismus. Materials and Methods: 40 patients in the age group ranging from 18-40 years having mesio angular impaction were divided into two groups. Group A (20 patients) received prophylactic 4 mg submucosal Dexamethasone intraoral injection and group B (20 patients) acted as a control group. Facial swelling and trismus were assessed at baseline, 3rd and 7th postoperative day. Data was analyzed using SPSS-10. Results: There were 14 males and 6 females in group A, 13 males and 7 females in group B. Administration of Dexamethasone has a statistically significant effect in reduction of facial swelling and trismus on third postoperative day (p < 0.05) in group A. At seventh day no facial swelling and trismus was found in both groups. Conclusion: Pre-operative 4 mg Dexamethasone submucosal intraoral injection had significant effect in reducing facial swelling and trismus.
