Abstract

Background:  Gene therapy is the upcoming trend in medical and dental faculty which has a promising future in treatment of various diseases and ailments. It basically involves transfer of normal genes or genetic materials in a cell with defective genes in vivo or in vitro in order to cure the disease. Although researches are going on, and positive outcomes are expected and may conceivably revolutionize clinical practice in the coming years. With the help of this review, light has been thrown upon the basic concept of gene therapy, methods of gene transfer, application of gene therapy in various fields of dentistry like, bone repair, implantology, head and neck cancer, orthodontic therapy, periodontal repair etc with its pros and cons.
