Abstract

Background:  The introduction of implant–supported prostheses has contributed to a significant improvement in restoring the masticatory function of patients. This literature overview aims to discuss the biological processes of predictable bone and soft tissue healing around an implant leading to its success. It also discusses the factors that affect healing some of which are the quantity and quality of bone, the patient’s age and health, location of implant placement, dimensions of implant, axial loading, and oral hygiene maintenance. The evidence collected from literature with respect to soft tissue and bone healing around implants was collected, categorized and summarized. To be successful, implant must integrate with the surrounding hard tissues, which is termed as osseointegration. The soft tissue following the implant surgery requires 6–8 weeks for complete healing and follows the same phases as skin wound healing.

Keywords: Dental implants, healing, osseointegration, soft issue integration.
