Background: Orthodontists strive to create both aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound masticatory systems for their patients. A deep understanding of cranio-mandibular articulation is vital, especially given the rise in TMJ complaints. Instrumental functional analysis helps evaluate jaw function and its relationship to the occlusion. An articulator mounting, unlike hand-held casts, reveals how the temporomandibular joints interact with the occlusion. The SAM II articulator, along with the MPI and axiograph, aid in diagnosis. The MPI measures mandibular deviation, while the axiograph records mandibular movement, offering insights into joint function and aiding in splint construction. The axiograph provides a more dynamic assessment, considering factors like musculature and the periodontal ligament, compared to the MPI's static analysis using mounted casts.
