Background: Soft tissue lasers have numerous applications in the orthodontic practice, including gingivectomy and gingivoplasty, flattening of bulbous papillae, frenectomy, exposure of partially erupted teeth, uncovering temporary anchorage devices, operculectomy, ablation of aphthous ulcer and even tooth whitening. Two most popular lasers used in orthodontics- the diode lasers and the solid-state laser are discussed here. As an adjunctive procedure, soft tissue laser surgery has helped many orthodontists elevate treatment efficacy, improving oral hygiene around fixed appliances during orthodontic treatment and enhancing final smile esthetics. Many types of dental lasers are currently available that can be efficiently used for soft and hard tissue applications in the field of orthodontics. Keywords: Dentistry, Laser, Orthodontics.
