Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment frequently necessitates the retraction of canines to correct dental malocclusions and achieve optimal occlusion. This review examines a range of methods for canine retraction in orthodontics, covering both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches. Traditional methods, such as elastic chains, NiTi coil springs, and power arms, provide effective and economical solutions but may require frequent adjustments and can cause patient discomfort. Contemporary methods, including temporary anchorage devices, clear aligner therapy, self-ligating brackets, and piezoelectric surgery, offer enhanced control, efficiency, and patient comfort. These newer techniques often involve advanced materials and technology, providing more predictable and efficient tooth movements. Each method’s mechanism, advantages, and limitations are discussed in detail to offer a comprehensive understanding of their clinical applications. This review highlights the importance of selecting the appropriate method based on individual patient needs, the severity of malocclusion, and clinical expertise. The evolution of canine retraction methods underscores the advancements in orthodontic treatment, aiming to improve patient outcomes and treatment efficiency. Future research and technological developments will continue to shape the landscape of orthodontics, offering even more refined and effective solutions for canine retraction
