Abstract

Background: Complete denture rehabilitation is still one of the main types of treatment of edentulous patients, but the overall patient-reported outcomes (PROs) knowledge on the variety of domains is deficient. The purpose of the study was to assess PROs after the completion of the process of complete denture rehabilitation in terms of oral health-related quality of life, and satisfaction, as well as functional parameters. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective observational study in which 156 fully edentulous participants were recruited who were prescribed conventional complete dentures at a university dental clinic between January 2022 and December 2023. The baseline, 1-month, 3-month and 6-month post-insertion assessments of PROs involved the Oral Health Impact Profile on Edentulous Patients (OHIP-EDENT), denture satisfaction questionnaire and chewing efficiency visual analog scale. Paired t-tests, repeated measures analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used as the statistical analysis. Findings: Mean OHIP-EDENT score reduced significantly between baseline (38.42 ± 12.67) and 6 months (18.56 ± 8.34) (P < 0.001), which represented a significant change in oral health-related quality of life. The total percentage of denture satisfaction has improved to 78.45 ± 11.82% (P < 0.001) as compared to 42.18 ± 15.23%. The scores of chewing efficiency were improved by 67.3% (P < 0.001). The age, gender, and edentulousness time had a significant impact on the outcomes of treatment. Patients who had shorter edentulous periods distributed better (P = 0.003). Conclusion: Full denture restoration is a significantly more effective treatment method to enhance PROs in the functional, psychological and social aspects. Prosthetic intervention and patient education provide success in treatment and patient satisfaction at the early stages of the healing process after the loss of teeth.
