Abstract

Background:  It is now understood well that arecanut & tobacco, both in isolation & association are potent carcinogens in their own right. India is no stranger to both these. The various forms in which they are available only complicates the understanding of this dreaded habit. This review paper strives hard to enlist all these varied forms, break them down to their ingredients and also throw light on their pattern of use, a complete knowledge of which is paramount if health promotion is our eventual goal. A note on history is also added which details the entry of smokeless tobacco in India and its travel through time which makes for an interesting read as well.
