Abstract

Since its introduction in early 1960s, nickel–titanium (NiTi) has undergone evolution through various stages for a better orthodontic treatment. NiTi archwires are now the most commonly used initial aligning and leveling archwires because of their unique properties such as shape memory, superelasticity, low modulus of elasticity, low and constant forces, and high elastic range. An increase in esthetic concern among the adults undergoing orthodontic treatment has led to the development of esthetic surface coatings for NiTi archwires. In addition to improved esthetics, surface coatings also affect the various mechanical properties of NiTi wires such as load deflection rate, friction, corrosion, nickel ion release, anti-adherent, and antibacterial property. In this review article, the various properties of surface coated NiTi archwires are evaluated.
