Abstract

Background:  Orthodontic tooth movement is brought about by prolonged application of force on the attachment apparatus which can be potentially damaging to the periodontium. Successful orthodontic treatment requires simultaneous care and management of the periodontal health. Thus the role of a periodontist in orthodontic treatment becomes invaluable. This article is an overview on the response of the periodontal ligament to orthodontic forces, some of the problems associated with it, periodontal maintenance of the orthodontic patient and the minor surgeries required to correct the defects affecting the soft and hard tissues of the periodontium.

Keywords: Orthodontic forces, periodontium, attachment apparatus, tooth movement, Supracrestal fiberotomy.
