The fundamental goal of orthodontic treatment nowadays is appropriate soft-tissue proportions and adaptations, with a functional occlusion as a secondary goal. The orthodontist must pay close attention to the three-dimensional orientations of the patient’s teeth, including intra-arch and inter-arch dental relationships, to achieve both cosmetic and functional treatment goals. The orthodontist must completely comprehend the mechanism by which orthodontic appliances induce orthodontic tooth movement, as well as the constraints of the various appliances available, to achieve the goals of orthodontic therapy, including correct torque.
