Abstract

Tumor microenvironment (TME) refers to the cellular environment where tumor cells reside. It is composed of stromal cell types, tumor
vasculature, and extracellular matrix that surround tumor cells. The TME plays a key role in the initiation, progression, and metastasis of
tumors. This review highlights the role of TME in tumor progression and metastasis. A thorough knowledge of the role of the TME in tumor
initiation and progression provides us with novel approaches to targeting TME for effective anticancer treatment. More studies on the tumor
cell-intrinsic pathway and extrinsic pathways in the TME, combined with current clinical approaches, hold a great potential for developing
efficient anti-cancer therapy.
